Friction

Friction is the deepest technique used to break down scar tissue and adhesions and loosen and realign tangled fibres. It can stimulate circulation and release fibrous adhesions around joints. The finger, thumb or elbow are used similarly to deep effleurage, but with greater pressure. Friction is a very powerful technique that can cause damage if used insensitively and will never be used on acute conditions. The patient should also be aware that it can cause bruising. It is used in NMT (see below) where it is often applied for longer periods. the same area can be returned to several times throughout the same treatment. Stretching should be carried out after friction.
