Neuromuscular Technique

Following trauma (including sports injury) in muscle tissue, hypertension occurs naturally and is controlled automatically by the nervous system.

In chronic conditions general massage may not be enough to release the hypertension and on becoming aware of this it can be necessary to work on a neuromuscular level, which means applying very deep pressure to myofascial trigger points ultimately to attain the required level of relaxation. In order to do this it is necessary to break the 'reflex' behaviour of the nervous system which can work on different levels depending on the level of trauma or when the nervous system accepts a high degree of tension as 'normal' following a long period of time after an initial trauma has remained untreated.

So in order to break the reflex we have to get the patient to control the situation by tricking the nervous system. The reflex action to pain is to move away or resist the pressure causing the pain, but in this case the patient will be encouraged to relax into the pain (using their breath for up to 90 seconds) until such time as the pain diminishes and relaxation occurs. The technique encourages the release of endorphins which in turn help to suppress the pain.
